Description

The “Chinatown Redevelopment and Asian American Placemaking in Las Vegas” symposium, hosted by the Neon Pacific Initiative, will focus on the Clark County government’s planned revitalization of Las Vegas’s Chinatown Plaza and Spring Mountain Road. The proposed project, called “Inspiring Spring Mountain,” seeks to address infrastructure needs and to “create a foundation and a vision for a neighborhood that is focused on cultural appreciation while supporting small businesses, increasing walkability, and attracting mixed-use development and thoughtful investment,” according to its website. Our symposium aims to educate the local community about these efforts, the history and significance of Chinatowns, and spark conversations that foreground and examine issues of gentrification, displacement, and placemaking—issues that other Chinatowns across the United States, especially newer suburban ones like Las Vegas, have already confronted. The goal is to highlight the impact Asian Americans have on urban and suburban landscapes, politics, and culture as well as create a more engaged and active public sphere critical to a more just and community-based approach to redevelopment.

The event will consist of two “sessions”:

  • 5-6:30 p.m.: screening of Big Fight in Little Chinatown (2022) documentary
  • 6:45-8 p.m.: “Chinatown Redevelopment and Asian American Placemaking in Las Vegas” roundtable conversation featuring scholars, organizers, and activists from around the country

ShareTea will be serving free boba during the screening, first come first served!
