Richard Miller (Music) has published a new peer-reviewed article, in the Asian Music, flagship journal of the Society for Asian Music. Using materials collected while a Fellow at the National Ethnology Museum in Osaka, Miller reports on a debate over the methods and goals of ethnographic transcription in the early years of Japanese folklore scholarship, drawing lessons for our understanding of the processes of identity formation through musical representation.
