In honor of Earth Day on April 22, ’s Recyclin’ Rebels and community partners will host a recycling event from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of the university’s Thomas & Mack Center.
The event is free and open to the public and will provide an opportunity for the community to drop off traditional recycling items as well as electronic waste, paint, and paper files.
Students in the William F. Harrah College of Hospitality planned the recycling day as part of a culminating undergraduate course on events management. Additional event partners include Rebel Recycling, MGM Resorts International, Blind Center of Nevada, Units Moving and Portable Storage, and Global Paint for Charity.
"Recyclin’ Rebels is so exciting because professors, students, and the community work together to promote the importance of recycling while bringing in the necessary resources for a large- scale recycling effort,” said Tara Pike, sustainability coordinator and recycling center manager. “And we couldn't do this without our wonderful community partners. Recycling is important and it takes a village to put on community events."
The community is invited to bring in their unwanted paper, cans, plastic bottles/tubs, cardboard, glass, and aluminum. Paint and most electronic items will also be accepted, including computer and a/v equipment, cell phones, printers, cords, and most other electronics. CRT monitors, flat screen or tube/rear projection TVs, copiers, printers, alkaline or household batteries, and lamps/bulbs will not be accepted.
"We are thrilled to partner with MGM Resorts International, Blind Center of Nevada, Global Paint for Charity, and Units Moving and Portable Storage to bring this recycling event to the Las Vegas community," said Hospitality College student Brendan Manning. "Together, we hope to make a positive impact on the environment and aim to promote responsible electronic disposal.”
The recycling event will be held in the Thomas & Mack Center parking lot, which is located on the campus off Tropicana Avenue and University Center Drive. The event is free, and no pre-registration is required.
